Merrie Monarch was founded in 1963 by George Naope, a renowned hula teacher and choreographer. The competition is named after King David Kalkaua, who was known as the “Merrie Monarch” for his love of hula and his support of Hawaiian culture. Merrie Monarch is held over three days and features competitions in four different categories: men’s solo, women’s solo, men’s group, and women’s group.
